Role of the Customs Directorates


Directorate of Customs Security:

The functions of the Directorate of Customs Inspection include:

  1. Prevention of the importation or exportation of commodities which under the national legislations are considered to be prohibited or restricted.
  2. Establishment of policies and procedures which aim at preventing smuggling.
  3. Application of customs clearance procedures to commodities within the permitted limits.

Directorate of Clearing:

The Directorate of Customs Clearance is a major Customs Directorate. The functions of this Directorate include:

  1. Implement the customs provisions related to the clearance procedures.
  2. Apply customs rules and regulations relevant to clearing of goods.
  3. Establish policies that will ensure the streamlining of importation and exportation.  

 Directorate of Customs Relation and Agreement:

The globalization process and other local and international development resulting in increased responsibilities on the Customs over the years necessitated the establishment of a Directorate of Customs Affairs in 1997. The main functions of this Directorate include:

  1. Support and co-ordinate with the other two Directorates in customs organization.
  2. Establish work processes to ensure the smooth running of customs and administrative work progress within the Government-approved economic objectives.
  3. Improve the efficiency of the staff through ongoing training in customs functions.
  4. Establish mechanisms for co-ordination with economic and customs organizations, at regional and international levels.
